Why gays and lesbians should have a party-list representation in congress

Should gays and lesbians be allowed a party-list representation in congress? Why not? They are a well organized group supported not only by lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders (LGBT) but also those who are not!

It is of old thinking that this unique group is only involved in immoral, scandalous, and illegal activities. There are already a lot of LGBTs involved for the betterment of our society, both hidden and exposed. They are present in the fields of the academe, corporate world, health services, legal services, and even in the military. Yes, the AFP is already accepting gays and lesbians. So why hinder them to have a party-list representation in Congress? They have a valid platform. They don’t push for same sex marriages but for equal rights and opportunities in employment and equal treatment. If given the opportunity to be in congress, I think and feel that they can contribute more. Gays and lesbians evidently contribute more to society than those corrupt politicians. They develop our Culture and Arts while the latter spoils it. They bring pride to our country with their achievements not only in the Philippines but also abroad. I would like to mention specifically my cousin who works as a nurse in New York. He was recently given the Stroke Hero Award for 2009 by the American Heart Association during the NYC Heart (and Stroke) Ball 2009. The list would go on.

Unity thrives when a group believes in one common cause and holds on to it. The more you suppress them, the more they will fight for their cause. The COMELEC may hold back on the LGBTs application for the party-list representation in congress for now. But the eventuality is inevitable.
